English Writing & Reading Strategy · Years 1 to 3

Confident readers, stronger writers.

Many children have wonderful ideas but freeze when it’s time to write them down. In small groups of up to 8, we teach children in Years 1 to 3 how to plan a piece of writing, build clear sentences, read with strategy and edit their own work with pride.

Children join a class at their year level. Contact our team to confirm the right group and current availability.

What Children Practise

The skills behind good writing

The goal is simple: children who can read with understanding, write with structure and communicate clearly.

Sentence structure

Children learn how strong sentences are built, so their ideas come out clearly instead of in a tangle.

Reading strategy

Instead of just reading the words, children learn to follow the meaning, find clues and understand what a text is doing.

Planning before writing

A simple plan turns “I don’t know what to write” into a piece with a beginning, middle and end.

Narrative writing

Children learn to tell a story that moves: characters, settings, problems and endings that satisfy.

Persuasive writing

Having an opinion is easy. Backing it up with reasons, in order, with conviction, is a skill we practise.

Editing their own work

Children learn to reread, spot what can be better and fix it themselves. That is where writers are made.

“The dragon hid all day because the storm was coming.”

Reading strategy in action: the clues tell us what the dragon is feeling, without the story ever saying “scared”.

How a Piece Comes Together

Plan. Write. Read. Improve.

Every piece of writing follows a rhythm children learn to own.

Every good story has a shape. Children learn to plan all three parts before they write.

Step 1

Plan it

Gather the ideas and give them an order, so the writing has somewhere to go.

Step 2

Write it

Turn the plan into sentences and paragraphs, with the teacher close by.

Step 3

Read it back

Reading their own work aloud teaches children to hear what works.

Step 4

Make it better

One stronger word, one clearer sentence. Editing becomes a habit, not a chore.

Parent FAQs

Questions parents ask about English

Who is this program for?

English Writing and Reading Strategy supports primary students, especially Years 1 to 3 (around ages 6 to 8). Children are grouped by year level. Contact our team to confirm the right group for your child.

What will my child actually do in class?

Each week children work on sentence structure, reading strategy, planning, narrative and persuasive writing, and editing. They write real pieces, read them back and learn to improve their own work.

My child hates writing. Will this help?

That is exactly who this program is designed for. Most reluctant writers are stuck, not lazy. A simple plan, clear sentence tools and encouraging feedback in a small group usually change how writing feels.

How many children are in each class?

Classes are small-group learning with up to 8 students, so every child’s writing gets genuine attention.

Can my child try a class first?

Please contact our team about joining a class at your child’s year level. We’ll discuss the available introductory options, scheduling and any applicable fees, and confirm everything with you before anything is booked.

How much does it cost?

Fees vary depending on the program, level, package and availability. Please contact our team for current fees and class availability.

Give your child the words

Tell us your child’s year level and our team will recommend the right English Writing and Reading group and confirm availability.
