Spark Math · Prep to Year 6

Maths that finally makes sense.

Spark Math uses a Singapore-style approach where children see the maths before they solve it. In small groups of up to 8, they learn visually, logically and step by step, building real understanding instead of memorising answers.

Not sure which class is right for your child? Get in touch with our team. We’ll learn a little about your child’s needs and help you explore the most suitable program, including available assessment or trial options.

How Children Learn

First see it, then draw it, then solve it

Sometimes children know an answer but can’t explain how they got there. Spark Math builds understanding in three stages, so the method makes sense before the shortcuts arrive.

The same “3”, three ways: children hold it, picture it, then write it with real understanding.

Stage 1 · Concrete

Hands and objects

Children start with things they can move and count, so a number is something real, not just a squiggle on a page.

Stage 2 · Pictorial

Pictures and models

Bar models and number bonds turn word problems into pictures, so children can see what the question is really asking.

24÷6 =4 Stage 3 · Abstract

Numbers with meaning

By the time children work with pure numbers, they understand what the symbols stand for, and the confidence shows.

Watch the Thinking

A word problem, drawn until it’s obvious

This is the heart of Spark Math. Instead of guessing which operation to use, children draw the problem, and the answer almost reveals itself.

  • 1Read it. Mia has 12 stickers. Tom has 5 fewer than Mia. How many does Tom have?
  • 2Draw it. One bar for Mia, a shorter bar for Tom, and the difference marked clearly.
  • 3See it. Now the question is simple: 12 take away 5. Tom has 7.

What Children Build

Stronger maths, and the confidence to use it

Spark Math supports what children are doing at school while extending their problem-solving and mathematical thinking.

Real understanding

Children learn why a method works, not just how to copy it, so the learning holds up when questions change.

Visual models

Bar models and number bonds give children a reliable way to untangle word problems on their own.

Step-by-step problem solving

Children practise breaking a hard question into steps they can manage, a skill that carries into every subject.

Mental strategies

Making ten, splitting numbers, spotting patterns: children collect strategies that make numbers feel friendly.

Explaining their thinking

In a small group there is time to ask “how did you work that out?”, and children learn to answer clearly.

Confidence that grows

Each solved problem is proof they can do it. Confidence in maths changes how children feel about school.

Prep to Year 6

One program that grows with your child

Children join at the level that matches their current maths, not just their age, and move forward when they’re ready.

The right starting level depends on your child’s age, year level and current maths. Our team will help work that out with you. Ask about assessment options.

How Lessons Work

Small groups, real attention

  • Weekly small-group classes during school terms
  • Interactive courseware and visual learning materials
  • Maths practice activities and problem-solving exercises
  • Classroom learning support and encouragement
  • Spark Passport points for effort and participation
School holidays: one-to-one lessons are offered only during school holidays, subject to availability and confirmation. During term, we’ll guide you to the most suitable small-group class.

8

Up to 8 students per class

Small enough for the teacher to see how every child is thinking, and to catch a wobble before it becomes a gap.

Spark Passport

Rewards for effort, not just right answers

Children earn Spark Passport points by participating, completing homework, practising, showing effort and building positive learning habits. Points can later be exchanged for small rewards and prizes.

It keeps motivation high, helps children feel proud of their progress and makes coming to class each week something to look forward to.
